Q

I am about nine weeks pregnant and my face is breaking out like I am 13 years old again! Is this normal?

A

Usually, acne improves during pregnancy, but I have seen it get worse as well.

When acne gets worse during pregnancy, it is usually not the typical outbreaks, but more extensive and more painful. Sebum secretion can be exaggerated in pregnancy. Unfortunately, beyond preventing secondary infection, there is not a great method of treatment for this during pregnancy. The drugs of choice such as the retinoids are contraindicated. There may be other medications or creams that would be safe for use in pregnancy. I would recommend that you seek the advice of a dermatologist.
