Did you know that the average American watches almost four hours of TV a day? That comes out to 28 hours each week or almost two months of nonstop TV-watching each year! (Source: A.C. Neilsen, 1998)

That's a pretty scary statistic. Do you have any idea how much TV you and your family watch? Can you even imagine life without TV?

We encourage you to give life without TV -- just for the week -- a try. Seven full days without TV will be a challenge. It will require energy and commitment. But the results -- according to ParentsPlace.com members -- are clear. Your kids will be less bored, less prone to tantrums and more engaged. Adults talk more to each other and their kids, they get more exercise and they spend more time reading.

Take this week to look at the effect TV has in your life -- whether it is used as an electronic babysitter, time-filler, entertainer or just plain background noise. Think of this as an exciting opportunity to explore more active pursuits with your family.
