Q

I am concerned about the high amounts of Vitamin A in some baby foods. Should I be worried?

A

You bring up an important concern. Preformed Vitamin A can become toxic at too high a level. Unfortunately, what baby food labels may not reflect is the fact that the foods may not really contain preformed Vitamin A, but rather its precursor, beta-carotene. The body will convert what it needs of beta carotene to Vitamin A, but will not produce toxic levels of it.

If your baby eats a lot of orange vegetables, his skin may take on an orangey tinge. This is not dangerous!
